Gene Khan, known by his formal title of the Mandarin, is the leader of the Ten Rings, a terrorist organization bent on world domination. Years ago, Gene, then a simple archaeologist on loan from the Chinese government, uncovered a ship belonging to a troop of Makluan terrorists, and in that ship, he discovered 10 ancient rings, imbued with cut pieces of the mystical Soul Stone, that possessed great power. Through the power of the Ten Rings, the Mandarin saw to claim the world. However his attempts mainly failed due to Iron Man and War Machine. He was previously thought to be a fictional character created by Aldrich Killian to cover up the Extremis attacks, but upon Trevor Slattery's kidnapping from prison by an actual Ten Rings agent, the truth of the Mandarin's existence has become all too well known to everyone involved in his schemes...
