Grey Gargoyle (MCU)

The Grey Gargoyle

Paul Duval was a chemist working in the employment of Advanced Idea Mechanics, studying a shattered Diviner case of Terrigen Crystals and a single vial of Extremis Serum combined with Molecular Nanotechnology and experimenting to see if he could create a serum that could repel the Diviner's petrification effects for those who did not carry the Inhuman gene while also building a specialized metallic armor for protection in battle. Upon submitting his trial approval to George Tarleton, Paul was given the go-ahead to begin self-experimentation, the combined liquid-metal/Terrigen Crystal serum transforming him into a being made of living Terrigenesis stone-like substance with cracks of Extremis fire scattered across his being. Discovering that he had inherited the Diviner's petrification abilities on non-Inhumans only in a nanotechnology goo form and incinerate their petrified forms with Extremis fire in his left hand, Duval set out on a criminal career as the nefarious Grey Gargoyle, taking his name from the stone carvings atop the cathedrals of his native France.

Powers and Abilities

  • Transformation: With a combination of the serum he developed and the Terrigen Crystals' Diviner metal, he became the Grey Gargoyle and obtained the following abilities:
    • Petrification: After absorbing the effects of the Diviner, Duval gained the ability to turn people to stone.
    • Superhuman Strength: While in his transformed state, the Grey Gargoyle's strength is increased to superhuman levels. At his peak, he is capable of lifting about 11 tons.
    • Superhuman Durability: Also while transformed, the Grey Gargoyle's stone body is highly resistant to physical injury. He can withstand high caliber bullets, falls from great heights, exposure to temperature and pressure extremes, and powerful energy blasts without sustaining injury.
